Why 'Evangelical'? It's the part of the name of our church that people often ask about. (They usually have some idea of what a church is and that we meet in Kenton in Harrow). So why 'evangelical'?
The word 'evangelical' is to do with good news.
Good news
The word has at its root the word used in the Bible for the 'gospel' - the good news proclaimed about Jesus Christ. So to be 'evangelical' is to believe and pass on the good news of Jesus Christ. It is that good news that is at the heart of our life together as a church.
Good news about the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ
At the centre of that good news is the message that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came into our world, lived a perfect life, and died on the cross to bear the punishment that we deserved for our sin and rebellion against God. His resurrection on the third day showed that his sacrifice was accepted and that he had beaten sin and death. So because of what he had done, men and women could have assurance of forgiveness and salvation, even of life after death, by putting their trust in him.
Good news revealed in the Bible
We find this good news about Jesus Christ in the Bible, which we recognise to be the Word of God. It tells us all we need to know to be in a right relationship with God, and how we then ought to live with one another. So you'll find that the teaching and preaching of the Bible is very important to us.
Good news for everyone
This good news is for everyone: no matter who you are, where you are from, or what you have done. One of the best-known parts of the Bible says, "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). That's good news for everyone - "...whoever believes in him" - and so evangelicals are people who want to share that good news with others. We would love to share more of it with you. Why not come along and find out more?
